Although the Senate Intelligence Committee voted on Thursday to declassify a report detailing the CIA’s use of torture that will confirm the 2007 revelations from John Kiriakou, former CIA analyst and case officer, Kiriakou himself is still languishing in prison. Kiriakou still has at least another year left in prison, but as Americans confront the horror contained within the Torture Report, they ought to also call for justice and freedom for the brave whistleblower who warned us about it years ago.   Continue Reading…

In nominating Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court in 2009, President Barack Obama said he was deeply impressed with her “extraordinary journey.” And his decision was almost as historic as his own election. Sotomayor, who grew up in a New York housing project as the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants, became the first Latin American justice in the 225-year history of the court, and only the third woman to serve on the high court.   Continue Reading…

Media attention has focused on the agreement involving the single resolution mechanism (SRM), a uniform system for closing failed banks. But the real story for taxpayers and depositors is the heightened threat to their pocketbooks of a deal that now authorizes both bailouts and “bail-ins”—the confiscation of depositor funds. On March 27 the United Nations General Assembly resolution entitled «Territorial integrity of Ukraine» (A/RES/68/262) was adopted with 100 votes in favour, 11 against (1) and 58 abstentions (2) (24 member states were either absent or present and not voting). Le CIFEDHOP (Centre international de formation à l’enseignement des droits de l’homme et de la paix) organisera à Genève, du 22 au 28 octobre 2014, la 9ème Session internationale de formation à l’Examen périodique universel (EPU) du Conseil des droits de l’homme pour les acteurs de l’éducation et de la société civile. Cette formation est prioritairement destinée aux enseignants/éducateurs/chercheurs et ONG actives dans le domaine de l’éducation aux droits humains.

Cette Session est organisée avec le soutien financier du Département fédéral des affaires étrangères, de la République et Canton de Genève et de la Ville de Genève.
