Published on Global, by Amar Toor, Sept 27, 2013.

Earlier this month, Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff announced plans to create an undersea fiber-optic cable that would funnel internet traffic between South America and Europe, bypassing the US entirely. Rousseff also urged legislators to pass an amendment that would force Google, Microsoft, and other US web companies to store data for Brazilian users on servers located within Brazil, while the country’s postal service has already begun developing an encrypted domestic email system.   Continue Reading…

The NSA Isn’t the Only Government Agency Exploiting Technology to Make Privacy Obsolete – Published on ZNet (first on TomDispatch), by Matthew Harwood and Christopher Calabrese, September 23, 2013.

For at least the last six years, government agents have been exploiting an AT&T database filled with the records of billions of American phone calls from as far back as 1987. The rationale behind this dragnet intrusion, codenamed Hemisphere, is to find suspicious links between people with “burner” phones (prepaid mobile phones easy to buy, use, and quickly dispose of), which are popular with drug dealers.   Continue Reading…

Agrarian Sovereignty and the Agrarian Question

Published on The Bullet, Socialist Project’s E-Bulletin No. 884, by A. Haroon Akram-Lodhi, September 23, 2013.

… The Agrarian Question:

That economic system is capitalism, and in the last three centuries it has transformed food provisioning and farm production. To understand how capitalism has changed farming and agriculture, the ‘agrarian question,’ first introduced by Karl Marx in volume 1 of Das Kapital, needs to be tackled: whether or not, and if so, how, capital and capitalist relations of production are or are not transforming agriculture. This transformation occurs by dispossessing farmers through outright displacement from the land or through the advent of marked differences in rural wealth arising from the everyday workings of highly imperfect markets.   Continue Reading…

American Exceptionalism: Exemption vs. Excellence

Published on Daily Kos, by J Pax, Sept 20, 2013.

… When I studied the concept in college several years ago, before it became a predatory pundit hot potato du jour, it meant something different than what Joe the Public now happily thinks it means. A lot of people think it means American Excellence. However, it really means the opposite. Follow me over the fold to find out why.   Continue Reading…

We, the Afghan Peace Volunteers, are finding strength amidst our dark nights because, in the daylight of a global awakening, we see people throughout the world refusing to comply with oppressive systems.   We see that we aren’t alone in rejecting governments and militant groups that wage wars and make deals at the expense of ordinary people.   Continue Reading…

Interview with Gerald Celente, published on Russia Today RT, Sept 18, 2013.

Another war will make a bad situation much worse for the US, Gerald Celente, publisher of Trends Journal, told RT. The US is already squandering resources fighting never-ending and unwinnable wars, and so the nation is going down economically, he added.

Inside the mind of NSA chief Gen Keith Alexander

Published on OpEdNews OEN, by Glenn Greenwald, Sept 15, 2013;

It has been previously reported that the mentality of NSA chief Gen. Keith Alexander is captured by his motto “Collect it All.” It’s a get-everything approach he pioneered first when aimed at an enemy population in the middle of a war zone in Iraq, one he has now imported onto US soil, aimed at the domestic population and everyone else.  Continue Reading…

Why did ‘real socialism’ and, in particular the Soviet Union, fall? Let me note a few explanations that have been offered. With respect to the Soviet Union, one very interesting explanation that has been suggested is that it’s all the fault of Mikhail Gorbachev. And not simply the errors of Gorbachev but the treachery. Those who offer this explanation rely in particular upon a document which is sometimes described as his confession. This document begins as follows:   Continue Reading…

(already on my HBB blog, Sept 17, 2011, by blog owner:

My comment to the article Corporate media promotes Republican ultra-right:

  • The big part of small people in this humanity developped the conscousness of being eternal victims, thus needing always strong mum/daddy/presidents making it for them.
  • All rainmakers and their right wing old boys networks in any country learned since decades to play victoriously with contradictions between people’s need for help and the MUST of own taken responsibility, becoming able to shame and shut down any progressist/leftist adversary wanting help these peoples.
  • Progressists must not only learn to win these battles of words, more, we must accept ourselves and learn people to go on with life’s existing contradictions, and refuse any corruption in thinking by false mum/daddy/president’s superpower promises.
  • As long as we run behind thus corrupted people, we are not leaders, but just begging a corrupted job, trying to guide a failing corrupted humanity.
  • Rainmakers can only win with the help of our own misguided phantasy.

(ganzer Text).

The high-earning butlers of Dubai

Comments Off

Published on BBCnews, by Sophie Robehmed, Sept. 11, 2013.

In Britain, butlers may seem like a relic of another era, but in some other countries, particularly emerging economies, they are in huge demand – and their employers can often afford to pay handsomely for the privilege.

If PG Wodehouse’s unflappable valet Jeeves had been called upon to work in the Arabian peninsula, you can be sure he would have been perfectly at home – Mayfair, Abu Dhabi… it’s all the same if you’re a professional with a job to do, a rigid dress code to uphold, and a gentleman to protect from overbearing aunts.  Continue Reading…
