A Terrible Normality

Published on ZNet, by Michael Parenti, January 26, 2013.

… Today in much of Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East there are “smaller” wars, replete with atrocities of all sorts. Central America, Colombia, Rwanda and other places too numerous to list, suffered the massacres and death-squad exterminations of hundreds of thousands, a constancy of violent horrors. In Mexico a “war on drugs” has taken 70,000 lives with 8,000 missing.   Continue Reading…

Interview with Noam Chomsky, by John Holder and Doug Morris, published on ZNet, January 24, 2013.

Minutes before the interview began we received news of a school shooting in CT (the Sandy Hook tragedy). Details were unclear at the time, but there was an indication that many young children had been killed. We thus opened the interview with a question about the school massacre:   Continue Reading…

Rape victims are being turned away, and divorced employees are losing their jobs. Catholic hospitals, kindergartens and nursing homes — which are primarily tax-funded — are causing problems for Germany’s social welfare state. But some politicians are fighting back.  Continue Reading…

Conspiracy Theory: Foundations of a Weaponized Term

Subtle and Deceptive Tactics to Discredit Truth in Media and Research – Published on Global, by Prof. James F. Tracy, January 22, 2013.

… Conspiracy theory’s acutely negative connotations may be traced to liberal historian Richard Hofstadter’s well-known fusillades against the “New Right.” Yet it was the Central Intelligence Agency that likely played the greatest role in effectively “weaponizing” the term. In the groundswell of public skepticism toward the Warren Commission’s findings on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the CIA sent a detailed directive to all of its bureaus.   Continue Reading…

Aid agencies should listen more to those in need

Comments Off

Published on IRINnews,  January 21, 2013.

For aid workers struggling to deliver assistance promptly and effectively, time to think, time to talk and time to listen are rare luxuries. But a new report from the US-based CDA Collaborative Learning Projects argues that making this time will be absolutely necessary to improving the quality and sustainability of international aid efforts.   Continue Reading…

The Left in Europe: From Social Democracy to the Crisis in the Euro Zone

Published on ZNet (Source: New Politics), Interview with Leo Panitch, by Adaner Usmani, January 21, 2013.

… AU: Well, and partly isn’t it a result of the fact that this crisis has occurred — certainly this contrast works best in the case of the United States — in a context where the left infrastructure of an earlier age has disintegrated?

  • LP: Well, yes, I was going to say: the whole reason it takes this quasi-anarchist form — and why the zeitgeist of the time for so many people is quasi-anarchist — is because of the failures of working class institutions. Continue Reading…

Published on AlJazeera, by Manuela Picq, Jan 15, 2013.

… Beyond rape:

  • In the midst of all this momentum, there is an issue that deserves greater attention. The crime that killed the victim was much more than gang-rape. There was rape, there was aggravated sexual assault, but there was also much more. I don’t mean it merely in terms of the type of sadistic violence taking place, but of the hatred and dehumanisation implied in it. She was not only raped, with the invasion of privacy and loss of dignity it entails. She was tortured. Mutilated.   Continue Reading…

On January 11th, 11 years to the day after the Bush administration opened its notorious prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow’s deeply flawed movie about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, opens nationwide. The filmmakers and distributors are evidently ignorant of the significance of the date — a perfect indication of the carelessness and thoughtlessness of the film, which will unfortunately substitute for actual history in the minds of many Americans … // Continue Reading…

Make sure I get home okay before the gun-toting psycho-freaks (soon to have air-strike capability) proliferate towards midnight (note: I’m obviously referring to a criminal element, but which sort and on whose payroll)?   Continue Reading…
