RDC: une insoutenable barbarie… mais que fait la communauté internationale

Comments Off

Dites-moi? … // Continue Reading…

Caveman Cuisine: Scientists Question Rise of the Paleo Diet

Comments Off

Published on Spiegel Online International, by Frank Thadeusz, November 08, 2013 (Photo Gallery: Stone Age Eating on the Paleo DietTranslated from the German by Christopher Sultan).

The paleo diet – which supposedly mimics what our caveman ancestors ate – has become a new health craze. But many scientists doubt that this hunter-gatherer cuisine of meat, veggies and fruit is as healthy as advertised, or even historically correct.

There are a growing number of people dedicated to the world of healthy food and starvation diets. Sometimes they try to convince their fellow human beings to join them in their strict approach to eating, advising friends and partners to cut down on beer consumption or give up bratwurst.   Continue Reading…

Agrarian Sovereignty and the Agrarian Question

Comments Off

Published on The Bullet, Socialist Project’s E-Bulletin No. 884, by A. Haroon Akram-Lodhi, September 23, 2013.

… The Agrarian Question:

That economic system is capitalism, and in the last three centuries it has transformed food provisioning and farm production. To understand how capitalism has changed farming and agriculture, the ‘agrarian question,’ first introduced by Karl Marx in volume 1 of Das Kapital, needs to be tackled: whether or not, and if so, how, capital and capitalist relations of production are or are not transforming agriculture. This transformation occurs by dispossessing farmers through outright displacement from the land or through the advent of marked differences in rural wealth arising from the everyday workings of highly imperfect markets.   Continue Reading…

Watch this Video-Interview with Dr. Maurice Hilleman, 9.57 min, uploaded on TV Natural News, August 26, 2011.

(ganzer Text).

My anorexic 9-year-old

Comments Off

I never thought this could happen to a child so young, in a body-positive household like ours. Boy, was I wrong – Published on SALON.com, by KRISTI BELCAMINO, August 6, 2013.

My 9-year-old daughter was starving herself to death. And somehow, God forgive me, I didn’t notice until it was almost too late.
We were busy running from soccer to swim lessons to play dates. But that’s no excuse. The mere idea of a fourth-grader becoming anorexic was so foreign, so wild and so far-fetched, that it never crossed my mind.  Continue Reading…

Women in Nepal Suffer Monthly Ostracization

Comments Off

Published on New York Times NYT, by ALLYN GAESTEL, June 14, 2013.

First watch a video, 4.31 min. – ACHHAM, Nepal — Next to an abandoned stable now used to store firewood, a reluctant young mother crouched to pass through a tiny door into a dark, musty room. Barely looking at her baby, she glanced around the mud walls at the place she was raped. It was not strange for her to be in this space, haunted as it was with violent memories, because she still sleeps here each month when she is menstruating.   Continue Reading…

Rape and Racism in Indonesia

where women live in fear – Published on Dissident Voice, by Abdre Vltchek, May 10, 2013.

My good friend, a Chinese Indonesian lady, recently got grabbed and assaulted, in the middle of Jakarta, in broad daylight.

When it happened, I was in Japan and we exchanged several messages, and emails. This was not the first time such a thing had happened to her and she felt humiliated, defeated, and thoroughly vulnerable.

“I wish I would be born as someone else – not as a Chinese. I wish I would look like everyone else”, she wrote.   Continue Reading…

The Layman’s Case Against Austerity

Comments Off

Published on New Economic Perspectives, by Stephanie Kelton, May 4, 2013.

Steve Kraske of The Kansas City Star recently interviewed me for a piece about austerity.  The story ran in today’s paper. It doesn’t provide much depth (unlike bloggers, journalists have strict space constraints!), so I followed up with a few comments on the Star’s website.  I thought I’d share them here, since I’m always trying to improve the way I communicate these ideas with non-economists.  So here’s my best effort to make the anti-austerity case in simple terms:

  • 1. When we allow our economy to operate below full employment (as now), we are sacrificing trillions of dollars in lost output and income each year. We can never go back and recover it.  It is gone forever.  You’ve seen the debt clock?  Here’s the lost output clock.   Continue Reading…

Amid Hunger Strike, Obama Renews Push to Close Cuba Prison

Comments Off

Published on the New York Times NYT, by CHARLIE SAVAGE, April 30, 2013.

WASHINGTON — President Obama said on Tuesday that he would recommit himself to closing the Guantánamo Bay prison, a goal that he all but abandoned in the face of Congressional opposition in his first term and that faces steep challenges now.

“It’s not sustainable,” Mr. Obama said at a White House news conference. “The notion that we’re going to keep 100 individuals in no man’s land in perpetuity,” he added, makes no sense. “All of us should reflect on why exactly are we doing this? Why are we doing this?”   Continue Reading…

Glyphosate, Part 3: A Trajectory of Human Misery

Comments Off

Published on Activist Post, by Heidi Stevenson, April 28, 2013.

Glyphosate was first introduced in 1974 and has become the world’s most dominant herbicide. It’s now generic, so there are many brands and formulations. As a result, it’s virtually ubiquitous, found nearly everywhere on earth.

Further driving its use are genetically modified (GM) crops, which were first developed for the purpose of creating glyphosate-tolerant plants, usually known as Roundup Ready. These have resulted in ever-more blatant and free use, especially in the wake of glyphosate-resistant superweeds. Estimates put glyphosate-tolerant GM crops at 90% of all transgene crops … // Continue Reading…

RESEARCHERS RAISE ALARM ABOUT LOSS OF INDIVIDUAL “GENOMIC LIBERTY” DUE TO GENE PATENTS THAT MAY IMPACT THE ERA OF PERSONALIZED MEDICINE – Published on Weill Cornell Medical College, March 25, 2013 (Contact Info) … same in german/auf deutsch: Du bist nicht Besitzer deiner “eigenen” Gene.

Humans don’t “own” their own genes, the cellular chemicals that define who they are and what diseases they might be at risk for. Through more than 40,000 patents on DNA molecules, companies have essentially claimed the entire human genome for profit, report two researchers who analyzed the patents on human DNA. Their study, published March 25 in the journal Genome Medicine, raises an alarm about the loss of individual “genomic liberty.”   Continue Reading…

Violence on the Home Front

Comments Off

Published on ZNet (first on TomDispatch), by Erika Eichelberger, April 19, 2013.

… Between 2005 and 2010, 60% of all violent injuries:

in this country were inflicted by loved ones or acquaintances. And 60% of the time those victimizations happened in the home. In 2011, 79% of murders reported to the FBI (in which the victim-offender relationship was known) were committed by friends, loved ones, or acquaintances. Of the 3.5 million assaults and murders against family members between 1998 and 2002 (the last time such a study was done), almost half were crimes against spouses. Eleven percent were against children. But the majority of violent deaths are self-imposed. Suicide is the leading cause of violent death in the U.S., and most of those self-killings happen at home.   Continue Reading…
