2. SEEKING TO ORGANISE HUMAN RIGHTS-THEMED CLASS TRIPS TO CAPE TOWN, WASHINGTON D.C., INDIA, GENEVA & THE HAGUE
Dear sir/madam, The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza City is mandated to provide basic services such as education, healthcare, relief and social services for over 4.6 million refugees living in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic. UNRWA promotes and supports Human Rights through the Agency’s Educational Programme. In 2002, UNRWA, as part of its non-violent conflict resolution and human rights programme, integrated human rights into its curriculum.
As part of this curriculum, we are developing programmes designed to give incentives to both students and teachers to excel at their human rights studies. An example could be a trip for the top students in each class to visit various cities wherein civil rights movements have taken place throughout history. We are currently looking at Cape Town, Washington DC, India, and, as central to the system of international institutions, Geneva and The Hague.
We would be very interested in working with organizations in this endeavour, be it in terms of organization of study trips, or sponsorship of one or more of the trips.
We would be greatly obliged if you could put us in touch with the most relevant contact point with whom to discuss this project. Ideas regarding previous programmes and potential donors/sponsors would also be most welcome.
Thanking you in advance for your cooperation. Best regards, Julie Mehigan, Human Rights Consultant, UNRWA Gaza Field Office, e-mail.
